Bookish Thursday - Murder by Milkshake by Elizabeth Maria Naranjo
If I were to be murdered, 'by milkshake' would be desirable. I'm one of those people who, when feeling under the weather, feel that anything can be cured by the proper application of ice cream. 'Proper application' being by cone, sundae, pint or scoop.
And did I mention, decades ago, I did have a crush on a certain '31 Flavors' manager?
Anyway...
This is another review for WOW-Women on Writing. But first, the business...
Book Summary
Life is sweet for high school senior and ice cream slinger Genevieve Winterland. Her father owns Sweet Dreams Ice Cream Parlour, the cutest confectionery shop in their little town of Pinewood, Arizona. Genevieve loves her job, but when her father hires a broody newcomer with a dark past to provide extra security on her closing shifts, Genevieve bristles. Is this part of her father’s plan to send her away to college, when all she wants is to stay in Pinewood and run the family business?

Elizabeth Maria Naranjo is the author of The Fourth Wall, The House on Linden Way, and What Was Never There. Her stories and essays have been widely published and nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best American Essays, and Best of the Net, and her short story, “Windows,” was selected for Best Microfiction 2023. She lives in Tempe, Arizona, with her husband and two children.

Now my opinion...
First off, this is a fun read for an afternoon. With a bowl of ice cream. The flavors Genevieve comes up with for the shop are definitely tasty.
Secondly, Genevieve is a high school senior, which makes this a tad different from other cozy mysteries which generally center on slightly older main characters. What I like is how believable Genevieve is, minus all the angst other teen books have. So I didn't feel like I was living with my teenage daughters again. (They're grown 30-ish women now.)
Overall, I want to visit the Sweet Dreams Ice Cream Parlour and try a milkshake Genevieve makes for me.
