Writing Wednesday - Late to the Dungeon Crawler Carl Party!
Normally this is where I would talk about my writing - or lack therefore.
However, I do have a couple of book blog tour reviews and a guest post coming up in the next few weeks, so I moved my review of this eight book series here.
Mainly because it is not often you read (or listen to in my case) eight 5-star books in a row!
The basic premise of the series is aliens have taken over Earth and the few million of people who 'survived' the attack are now in a 'reality' show where they have to go through dungeons, or levels, fighting creatures and each other. They earn rewards from fans and sponsors if they are good enough, which help them make it through the dungeons.
First off, I did actually read the first book (shown above) of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman. The next ones I listen to as audio books. I am in awe of Jeff Hays, the narrator. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos where he has been interviewed and he is unbelievable!
Secondly, I am coming into these books with a bit of a background in RPG, DnD and the like. Yes, we are a gaming family. I am a Night Elf Druid, Feral spec in World of Warcraft. Leafcrone and I have been together for over 20 years!
So these books appeal to me on a 'gaming' level.
You don't really need a background in leveling, choosing race and specs, looting, buffs, debuffs and the like. One of my friends is loving the books and she is not a gamer.
Right now I am on book seven of the eight books. As the books have gone along, they have changed in tone. The first book or two eases you into the world Carl, and of course, Princess Donut, find themselves in.
But as they fight their way from level to level, the tone slowly changes as Carl goes from Mr. Average Joe to someone who might be leading a revolt. This is definitely a series of books where the main character grows and evolves throughout the series.
The end action of book six had me in tears. The whole series has more than enough humor - some of it along the lines of bathroom humor - but giggles do abound.
My only real 'bone to pick' with the series - it will end!
Note: Soundbooth Theater, founded by Jeff Hays, is in the process of creating a full cast narration of the books. Peacock TV is also in the process of adapting the books to TV.
