Home and Garden Friday - The Torch Being Lit

While I am not giving up gardening at any time in the near future (hopefully), I am so excited and thrilled to know at least one of my daughters has taken a step toward carrying on the 'family' legacy of gardening.

Savvy, who now wants a home with a big enough yard where she can have a 'homestead', has started her first garden. Texts have flown between between North Carolina and Arizona. And talk about different zones for gardening!

But her father-in-law built her a raised bed. It's about 4 X 8 feet, raised up off the ground and lined to protect the wood. But it does have drainage holes in the bottom. I sent her a box of seeds for her to decide what she wanted to grow.

So about a month ago, she spent a weekend adding soil and compost to the bed and creating several small containers for herbs.

Filled with lettuces, spinach, radishes, onions, peas and beans, she is well on her way to being a 'homesteader'.

She is so thrilled with the process and loves coming home from work and checking on her crops. Already she has had a small salad out of her garden. Savvy has been so focused on her garden, she even went to visit a friend of her father-in-law who is a gardener. She wanted to learn and see what was possible to grow in Arizona.

His garden was fantastic she said. Plus she sent her home with a fig tree of her own.

So the torch has been lit and I can see it being carried forward another generation.

Now I just need to separate and pot up my seedlings and sow my tomatoes!
