Food and Fiber Friday - Quilts Into Jacket
So...
I have gotten bitten by the clothes making bug. I have avoided it over the years, mainly because I felt that 99% of what I made clothes-wise were just...well, shit.
But lately I have been wanting to do 'up cycling' of clothes. And making clothes. I am even taking a sewing class on how to sew a shirt. Was talked into it with a gardening/book reading friend.
And don't you know the instructor is fantastic and I been 'infected'. It doesn't hurt she also loves fountain pens, Good Postage and planners. So much so, we are probably meeting up for a 'Drunk Journaling' event at Good Postage. At 67, is it weird to be fan-girling?
Anyway...
I wanted to make a quilted jacket.
Now there is a whole controversy over using quilts to make jackets. There is the recycling group which snatches up quilts and turns them into jackets and pillows and dog beds and everything in between. Then there is a group which wants to burn people at the stake for this use of quilts from thrift stores.
I can understand if the quilt is obviously handmade you might want to hesitate in cutting it up. However, most of the quilts I see at thrift stores are machine made, usually in China or India. To me, that's fair game to use.
While I was strolling through a Goodwill last Sunday, I found the two items above. One is a large quilt and the other a large throw with chenille detailing. And the colors go together!
I have a pattern for a hooded jacket made from a quilt. The front, back and hood of the jacket will be the quilt. The sleeves and pockets will be the chenille throw. And I will add cuffs made from the quilt.
I also made a pair of Lane pants.
As you can see, I am surrounded by boxes and stacks of fabric and 'stuff'. This is my sewing stash I brought downstairs. My quilts I am working on are down here. There are several quilts where the tops are made and I need to actually quilt them. Lots of fabric for future projects.
There will be more of these pants to come. I like the way they feel on. I have some dark green qauzy fabric and some knit. I think I want to make some shorts out of this pattern too. I have several small pieces of knit fabric and will make some wild, multi-colored shorts to wear around the house.
So...
I guess I am an old sew-and-sew!
