Ok, now for the hard part, my opinion.
First off, I am an escapism reader. I read to go to other times, other worlds. Gritty realism isn't something I normally pick up. And page one hits you right between the eyes with the theme of the book. Also, I am not really a stream of consciousness reader either. And to me that's how the book read. So this is not a favorite of mine - which has zero to do with the quality of the book itself. It's all about me.
That being said, I can understand why the main character, Carlie, removes herself from her family. I did something similar. However, I was much older with 2 kids and 1500 miles away, not a young adult moving halfway around the world. My reasons were not the same as Carlie, but the relief of finally acknowledging 'done' is tremendous.
Unfortunately, I am a little sensitive to the triggers in this book based on friendships with a couple of people who have been in my life for many years. While this is not a book I could just recommend carte blanche to anyone, it is definitely worth a read if certain topics are not triggers.
