Home and Garden Friday - Winter Weather and Creativity Isn't Always Pretty

The past week has been very interesting. We, meaning about half the country, spent several days getting ready for a huge 'winter weather event'. North Carolina was already calling for a State of Emergency. So I was preparing for not being able to travel for a few days (that did happen), possible power outages (that didn't happen to me) and luckily, no loss of internet.

It was supposed to start on Saturday afternoon, but didn't actually hit my house until late Saturday evening. I woke up Sunday morning with a patchy trace of snow. However, Sunday was supposed to be the 'bad' day, with freezing rain. I did get some freezing rain, but for the most part it messed up the roads in my area and covered the snow with a thick 'shell' of ice.

When the freezing rain started on Sunday, Foxy and I were holding our breaths it didn't become heavy enough to down power lines. While we didn't experience any power outages, some people I know did have brief interruptions of power.

Nashville, Tennessee on the other hand, seems to have taken the brunt of the weather. According to some reports, 90% of the Nashville area is without power. And having lived without power in the winter  for a week, I am sympathy for them.

While waiting out the storm and sorting through a bin full of scraps, I cut out 144 6.5 inch squares for a scrap quilt I want to make. In order to figure out how I need to do it, I created a photoshop image so I could calculate what I needed and how it would go together.

I got the idea for the quilt from watching a YouTube vide by Merry Mabel Market. This is her 'Twirling Vines' pattern. While I don't need the directions, I need to get an idea of my count for blocks and the background fabrics. Thus, I created a quick photoshop mockup.

While her quilt is done with scraps all in one color, mine will be multicolored. I wanted to see how the small blocks fitted together into larger segments to form the columns. I want to have a rainbow look. And this is a quilt I can pick up and put down easily.

But as you can see, my mockup isn't pretty. I needed it to get my head around how the blocks go together so I could do a count and do what I need to do. So 'art' or 'creativity' isn't always pretty.
