Bookish Thursday - Guest Post! Setting Goals to Achieve Your Dreams

And it is a bit funny I selected this as a guest post topic, because all I have been doing the past few days is thinking about what I want to have in my life and how to achieve those goals. But I will let someone else give you their opinion...

Setting Goals to Achieve Your Dreams
By Ekta R. Garg, Reviewer, Editor, Author, Dreamer

When we think about making our dreams come true, it’s easy to quit before we start. There’s always another task or person we think needs our attention over ourselves. Maybe we feel unworthy of putting
our dreams first. Sometimes the size of the dream scares us, and we let fear take over.

I believe any dream is achievable. John F. Kennedy said, “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” First decide you’re going to try. You’re going to try at every opportunity you get to work on your dream. You’re going to show up for yourself no matter who else will. Then come up with a plan.

Here’s a framework for turning your deepest wishes into realities:

 A dream written down with a date becomes a GOAL.
 A goal broken down into steps becomes a PLAN.
 A plan backed by action becomes REALITY.

1. A dream written down with a date becomes a GOAL. Dreams are musings or desires. Goals are
concrete achievements. Put your dream on paper where you can see it every day—next to your
computer, in the car, on your bathroom mirror—with the date of when you want to accomplish it. Tell
supportive family and friends about it. Say it aloud every day when you start to work on that dream.
“Today I’m working toward…,” and name your dream in specific terms, even if you’re the only one in the room.

2. A goal broken down into steps becomes a PLAN. Instead of trying to tackle an entire dream all at
once, create a concrete plan with smaller, more manageable steps that are easy to complete. Want to
write a book? Work on one chapter a week. If writing one chapter a week feels like too much, split up
your writing by word count: “I’ll write 500 words every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.” You don’t
have to write at the same time on those days (unless that works for you.) Instead, stay flexible to have
room for other commitments and a buffer for the unexpected. Do be firm about getting those words
done each of those days. By breaking your goal down into achievable steps, not only will you be that
much closer to your dream with every step but also you won’t get overwhelmed by doing too much at
any one time.

3. A plan backed by action becomes REALITY. When you give yourself smaller, achievable deadlines for your goal, those tasks add up. Writing 500 words a day for three days a week may only add up to 1500 words for that week, but after a month that’s 6000 words. After 12 months, that’s 72,000 words—a book-length work. You’ve achieved your dream, and you’ve done it in a way that makes sense for you.

If you have a dream, don’t let other people’s opinions or your own fear keep it from coming true. With
an achievable goal and a strategic plan, your dream absolutely can become your new reality.
