Seedy Saturday - Hydroponics and a New Orchid Blooming
Last week I finally got around to setting up my two hydroponic units with lettuce, spinach and kale for eating during the fall and winter. It will be interesting to see how that goes. I also nestled my orchids around the lights to give them a bit of a light boost.
One of the two new orchids I got had a flower spike when I bought it 3 weeks ago and it started opening up last week. There is a bit of a perfume from the spike as it opens - a sweet smell, very pleasant. There are also 2 more spikes forming, so I am really excited. The other new orchid is a 'Thunderstorm' orchid. So I can't wait to see if it does bloom during thunderstorms. Both orchids were purchased from Carter and Holmes Orchids in Newberry, SC. (just a few miles from where I pick up Lady K).
Also new to the house are a few 'starts' I purchased with birthday money from Savvy. I got an orange and a white Bird of Paradise plant. There are two new gingers in grow bags, Shampoo Ginger and Thai Ginger (galangal) and to round off the purchase, a Peppercorn Vine. They arrived healthy from the grower in Florida and the peppercorn vine is already sending up new growth, along with one of the Bird of Paradise plants.
Now if only I can get this much accomplished in the garden. However, I do need to bring back a cactus from Foxy. She doesn't have near enough light at her apartment for it to be happy.
So while I am not a real fan of cactus, I will find a nook to put it in the yard.
