Bookish Friday - It Gets Easier! by Claudine Wolk

Yes! Second day of book reviews for WOW-Women on Writing

First, a bit about the book itself.

Every new mom learns pretty quickly how difficult new motherhood is but also that nobody tells the truth about it. Author and narrator Claudine Wolk learned the same lesson after her son was born but decided to speak the truth about motherhood with humorous insight and reality-based suggestions. A few crucial tips can make motherhood a bit more controllable and a lot more enjoyable.

Now my opinion...

First, my youngest, Texter was also born in 1993, the same year as her son. Thirty years later, she and I are both still alive and kicking. And not in jail from killing each other. Her birth was the more interesting one.

Savvy was pretty straight forward. And we had done a 'pregnancy' course at the hospital. The best part of that was exactly what is going to happen when you enter the hospital until you leave. I also got a bottle of wine and a steak dinner after she was born. And those wonderful pads,  which are also ice pads, for my crotch.

When my mother visited a couple of weeks later, she looked at Savvy laying on the floor on a blanket, sleeping. She looked at me and told me when I was born you (1) didn't breast feed and (2) you didn't touch the baby unless it was feeding time and that was every 4 hours. That in itself explained a lot about my upbringing.

Anyway, while it didn't have much in the way of drugs, with Texter I was entertained by the doctor (who spelled it GOD) and the new nurse fighting over how the instruments were laid out on the tray. Personally, I was hoping she would just punch him in the face.

Also, they don't tell you some babies decide 9 centimeters is the correct time to emerge and not wait until 10 centimeters! Which explains a lot about her upbringing!

This book is great for mothers - after the time of birth. I think it would be fun for a mom and grandmother to read it aloud to a daughter/granddaughter when she is pregnant, laughing the whole time.

P.S. Any woman who tells you the birth of her child was a wonderful time - angels sang and rainbows filled the room - was on massive drugs at the time!
