Bookish Thursday - Anomaly Aftermath by Hugh Fritz

Once again I have the privilege of reviewing a book for WOW-Women on Writing.

This time it is a fantasy/sci-fi-ish and is actually Book 3 in a series. But more on that later. First, the business of the review.

About Anomaly Aftermath:

Soleil is lost in time, launched through history at the hands of the Old Ticker. Now he is out of his element. He must adapt to his new home, hope it’s possible to return to his original time, and pray for a chance to correct some mistakes along the way.

Tyrell knows Flarence killed Darren. He wants revenge, though a mere human with limited resources has no chance of harming a Genie. But Roy’s body is failing to the point that not even Genie blood can sustain him. The cause of Roy’s slow death may give Tyrell the opportunity he needs to make Flarence suffer.

The Old Ticker’s designs have been leaked. Now they rest in deadlier hands and more mischievous minds. A pair of spell-casting revolvers were nothing compared with the new weapons being developed in secret. The Genies may have met their match when a scientist emerges armed with the most devastating firearm the world has ever known.

These three novellas are the culmination of the Mystic Rampage series—historical fiction, contemporary action, and near-future science fiction. Connecting them all is their shared theme of overcoming regrettable decisions to forge a brighter future.

About the Author, Hugh Fritz:

Hugh Fritz is thrilled to have completed his Mystic Rampage trilogy, a project eight years in the making. While writing the series he has outlined and written rough drafts of other stories ranging from horror to romance. He is currently bouncing between his works in progress, deciding which one should get his full attention. Whatever comes next will assuredly be a step in a whole new direction.

Now for my opinion...

First, normally I have no problem starting in the middle (or end) of a series and pick up what is going on. I'll then go back and read the other books if the series captures my attention. In agreeing to review Anomaly Aftermath, not only did a receive a copy of the book, but the author also sent me the first two books in the series. So three books.

I have to sadly admit I didn't have enough time in my schedule to read the first two books, but I plan to in the future. Actually, what I may do prior to reading them is to let a co-worker read the series first. He is big into fantasy, gaming, all the 'stuff'.

Secondly, and my real downside to the books - I hate the covers. They remind me of 1940's or 50's detective noir-style covers. If I came across the books on an online search or in the store, I would pass them over. It hurts to say that, especially since I am planning on self-publishing books of my own. But I think the covers need redoing. That being said, if you read further down, the covers might appeal to a certain type of reader.

Another small criticism is labeling Anomaly Aftermath as Book 3 in a series when it is a series of three novellas rather than a full book of its own. Without having read Book 1 and 2, I am wondering if the three books could not have been blended together and have 3 books rather than Book 3 being three novellas. I'll have to see when I go back and read the first two books.

Ok...

That all being said, the stories are good (and no spoilers are included in this review). Good enough to be willing to put the other two books on my TBR shelf.

One thing which really caught my attention, and that I really liked, were than the characters were genies rather than fairies or vampires or some other, more typical, character which has magical abilities. It is really refreshing to see that.

Based on Book 3 only, to me, the book is definitely a 'guys' book. Which makes it a book I would be willing to recommend to male readers. It also, to me, leans toward being more of a YA read. So I feel a middle-school or high school reader, who doesn't want all the 'glitter' and 'romance' of other fantasy books would be very happy reading this series.

But don't take my opinion of this book. Check out the following reviews...
