Seedy Saturday - What About Them Apples!

Remote learning or not, last Monday Lady K didn't have school. It was a teacher's workday. Plus she had spent the weekend at my house.

So...

We decided an apple picking trip was in order.

She had never picked apples and was excited to go, especially since we had missed the cherry picking season.

We loaded up and despite the forecast of rain, headed west to the 'mountains' to pick apples at Sky Top Orchards.

The last mile 'UP' to the orchard is a fantastic twisty mountain road.

Upon arrival it seemed we were not the only ones who thought a trip to the orchard was in order, but it wasn't bad. We at least arrived early enough to park in their lot on the farm and not across the road.

Sky Top had been a commercial apple orchard and converted to a U-pick business a few years ago. They have a whole covered area for buying already picked apples, as well as numerous other food items. I didn't take a picture of the apple cider donuts which are delivered hot and delicious!

Fresh apple cider, as in they are pressing apples as fast as they can to keep up with the demand, is also available.

But onto the main reason for being there.

There is a play area and a petting 'zoo' area. The animals were not available to pet due to covid-19 which was a bit of a disappointment to Lady K. But she forgot about it quickly.

It was late enough in the apple picking season so that all the apples available to pick were at the FAR reaches of the orchard. Like WAY down that hill. Like the person who is supposed to be 'resting' shouldn't be walking because it will be all uphill on the return!

The majority of the rows of trees are marked with the variety of apples they contain. But someone didn't care about that. She was so excited to actually pick apples herself right off a tree. And that's what this trip was all about.

I wanted her, like I wanted my daughters, to know things don't just appear in the store. They come from trees and plants and grow and someone has to grow them and then pick them.

Lady K had a fantastic time and delighted in telling people as we were walking back to the top of the hill 'the apples are down there'.

It was a great morning spent outside, enjoying the fall weather and fresh apples.

She got her caramel apple she really wanted. Not as good as a Parrot Confectionary caramel apple in Helena, but it was acceptable.

Now I have to figure out what to do with a huge bag of apples!
