The Silver Box - by Margi Preus

Again I was lucky enough to be selected to review Book 3 in the Enchantment Lake Mystery series by Margi Preus for WOW! Women on Writing.

The book being reviewed is The Silver Box, which is book 3 in the series. I was lucky enough to receive all 3 books since Lady K will soon be at the stage to read these books.

A brief synopsis before my review (with possible spoilers).

In the final Enchantment Lake mystery, Francie’s search for the truth about her mother—and herself—plunges her into danger during a North Woods winter.

When she wakes in her aunts’ cold cabin on the shore of Enchantment Lake, Francie remembers: everything about her life has changed. Or is about to. Or just might. Everything depends on the small, engraved silver box that she now possesses—if only she can follow its cryptic clues to the whereabouts of her missing mother and understand, finally, just maybe, the truth about who she really is.

Francie, it turns out, has a lot to learn, and this time the lessons could be deadly. Her search for answers takes her and her best friends Raven and Jay as far afield as an abandoned ranch in Arizona and as close to home as a sketchy plant collector’s conservatory and a musty old museum where shadows lurk around every display case. At the heart of it all is a crime that touches her own adopted North Woods: thieves dig up fragile lady’s slippers, peel bark from birches, strip moss off trees, cut down entire forests of saplings to sell for home décor. But Francie is up against no ordinary plant theft. One ominous clue after another reveal that she possesses something so rare and so valuable that some people are willing to do anything to get it. When Francie’s investigation leads her into the treacherously cold and snowy North Woods, she finds out that she too is being pursued.

Now my opinion.

First off, I was a bit surprised by the fact it's not as 'childish' as I was afraid it would be. And there is an absence of teenage angst. This is probably because the books are geared for middle school kids and they may not be quite as angsty as high schoolers and young adults. And while the writing was 'simpler' than an adult read, it was not bad for an adult to read.

Secondly, and this is just me as a mother and grandmother - why is this 17 year old living on her own? And why are these kids running around with little or no adult supervision?

Over the 3 books you do discover Francie is an actress, as well as a student, and has lived in New York alone to pursue her acting before moving back to Minnesota to be near her two aunts. Plus she does have a brother and grandfather who keep tabs on her. So it's understandable, but it did bother me as an adult. For a younger reader, it would probably be a dream life.

Anyway...

The last book in the series, The Silver Box, focuses on a (surprise) silver box and what it might mean to Francie and her missing mother. The box was briefly mentioned in Book 1 and a bit more in Book 2 and is the mystery for Book 3.

From Minnesota to Arizona and back, Francie and her friends strive to figure out the puzzle of the box while avoiding the people who seem to be chasing them and wanting the box and its possible contents.

Overall, I enjoyed the series. And while you can read Book 3 as a stand alone book, I would recommend reading the entire series. There are more details you learn by reading the whole series.

I also am pleased I have all three books to pass on to Lady K in the next couple of years. I think she will enjoy them as much as I did.

In the meantime, please check out other posts on this 'book tour'.
