NOW MY OPINION!
First off, I am a journaling junkie. I do Morning Pages every morning which have evolved into more of a daily journal than just a brain dump to get everything out of my head. My day doesn't start right without putting pen to paper. And I have a huge trunk full of journals from over the years.
Secondly, I had reviewed another book of hers almost a year ago, Journaling Power.
When I first picked up the book to read, I was encouraged with the introduction where McCarthy states this book will help me be the person I could be and not the person I feel I should be. As someone who has struggled with that for decades, it sounded promising. Then I started Chapter 1.
Ok. I have a negative mindset when it comes to 'media blaming' and/or 'video game' blaming for the problems you or the world are facing. Like most things, social media, media in general, are like most things, too much of a thing is bad. They are tools to use in your daily life - completely under your control on what you take it or take away.
Part of this resistance to blaming social media for the woes of the world are a couple of people in my life who blame the internet for everything wrong with their kids and kids in general. It's like saying that serial killer can't be blamed for being a serial killer because of the trauma in their earlier life. I know people who have had major trauma repeatedly while growing up and they aren't serial killers.
But I digress (climbing off my soap box).
I have to say, after reading the first chapter, I had to put the book down and walk away for a bit.
But when I picked it up again - Boy, did it hit home for me on several levels!
First, McCarthy talks about how family can 'bury your gift'. And the example used, expectations about the route to take when you go to college - Bingo!
Then there are friends and their impact on your life. Surround yourself with negative people and you quickly become a negative person
And the difference between using the word 'could' rather than the word 'should' when thinking about things you want to accomplish with your life.
Chapter Two had be off and running!
Each chapter has an exercise or 'journaling prompt' for you to work through. While I didn't sit down and do the work while I read through the book the first time, it is on my desk to go back, now that I have read through the book one time, and start over again. Which I will, but not by rereading Chapter One! (LOL)
This tiny book is about loving yourself. In a world which does talk a lot about self-care and having time to love yourself with spa days, time alone, treating yourself well so you can treat others well, you also have to take care of yourself internally, as well as externally.
