Week in Review - May 22 - 28, 2023

The picture above is from what I call my 'purple corner'. The thyme is blooming and is a lovely light pinky-purple. With the purple chair near it, it really pops. And behind the chair is a hyacinth bean vine which is climbing and already has bean pods on it. So lovely.

I did a quick dash into the garden yesterday (Sunday) morning and stuck a few luffa seeds and African Drum gourd seeds into the ground where my Sweet Peas and Sugar Snap Peas are currently residing. They are a bit 'blah' as it is already getting too late in the year for them to flourish. My fault entirely. But I am hoping the gourds take over that area.

While out there in the drizzly rain I checked on the beans I planted around a tepee on the 21st. They are starting to emerge and with the warmer temperatures forecast for next week, plus the rain the past couple of days, they should really take off. I want to sow some alyssum in the tepee on the pile of composting weeds to see if it will grow. An experiment.

Last Monday I picked up some plants from work for $5 each. I have a fuchsia, begonia and geranium which I am hoping to propagate for next year's plant sales. I also 'rescued' several small lilies and they were gifted to herb society and member gardener buddies.

Tuesday I made a couple of peach cobblers to take to work. They were made from peaches from California, which were surprisingly good. I also managed to get the whole yard mowed, this was nice. Especially since I managed to snag a load of bamboo for the garden fencing.

Wednesday I was in a bit of a 'cleaning' mode, so I leaned into the feeling. Got a bit of the house tidied and dusted, which was nice.

While at work on Tuesday afternoon I got a call from Lady K. Her award ceremony at school was going to be Thursday morning. Unfortunately, Texter came down with a flu-like bug, so I made the trip down to SC for the morning by myself. Lady K has reached the milestone of entering her last year in elementary school. She is a rising 5th grader now.

The sourdough fermenter I back on Kickstarter arrived earlier in the week, so I started a batch of sourdough starter. I have to say, being 5 days into the cycle, it is probably the best start I ever had. This time I didn't use wheat or rye flour to start it with, I used some 'Better for Bread' flour. It's bubbling away like crazy.

Friday I planted the last of the tomatoes in the ground and got some okra, sunflowers, brown field peas and black beans planted before the rain started on Saturday. I also updated my garden layout with what tomatoes were planted where. Which means I counted the number of tomatoes in the ground - 111! Actually, it is a tad more as I counted the Mexico Midget as 1 plant rather than the half-dozen or sow in the herb bed.

Saturday and Sunday were lazy feeling days and I really wanted to stay home, but went into work as it is also Memorial Day Weekend, so we were really busy.

Otherwise this week...

  • Wrote 5 posts, one of which was a book blog tour
  • Walked over 5000 steps every day but 1. Hit over 10K one day
  • Finished 3 books, one of which will be review next week
  • Have all the veggie garden planted except for one area

This coming week...

  • Finish planting out the veggie garden
  • Start on the bamboo fence around the garden
  • Set up my June budget pages
  • Attempt to turn my compost heap some
  • Weed the veggie garden
  • Finish book for the next book blog tour due on the 8th of June
  • Attend an open garden tour on Saturday

But for now, more coffee and a nap before heading to work.

PS...My 'gifted' feverfew is looking fantastic!
