No, my backyard veggie garden isn't completely in...
Yet.
But it's coming along. Actually, at this point I am using the remainder of the garden I want to set up as my way to succession planting for the summer. So a 'bed' at a time. Plus, most of the tomatoes I have to plant are still small and I'm not in a huge hurry to get them planted.
This is a view of the remainder of the back yard as of Monday the 5th...
I have beds marked out already. So there are 7 beds on this side of the yard. The small 4x6 bed in the front of the picture on the left is planted with some melons, cantaloupes and walking onions.
But, by the end of last Monday, I had my 'Saucy Lane' planted.
The left side of this bed contains my sauce/paste tomatoes. There are 11 San Marzano and 8 Italian Heirloom tomatoes (plus a couple of extra tomatoes). The right side has a small area of Contender Bush beans and a larger section of Roma Bush Green beans. And a few flowers and herbs planted among them.
Another area of my back yard area is the 'Pepper Pot Row'.
I sowed some buckwheat in the row. I have never grown it before, but it is supposed to be a great cover crop and good for attracting pollinators to your garden. But it is also very pretty. I only had a little envelope of seeds for what I planted. I think next year, earlier in the year, I will plant buckwheat as a cover crop on my beds before I get around to planting them.
My sweet peas have started climbing up the poles. Hopefully, it won't get overly hot before I get a few peas off them. They will be replanted with runner beans after they die back.
In the front yard, wonderful things are happening.
They look at little sad now because they were just replanted, but this is 'Regina Row'. I have a 'V' between two paths, one to the back yard and the other to the herb garden. I nursed along these daylilies for a year now, not knowing where I wanted to plant them. So I finally decided I want them to fill out this area. I do need to get a low fence around it to keep the dogs from running across.
There is a dwarf butterfly bush at the front of the 'V' and I left room around the water tub, because the dogs drink from it - like they don't have water inside.
Another things which is bringing me a lot of joy is my wisteria and jasmine on the front porch.
I still need to get up and run some of the wisteria across the front of the porch, but it means me clearing space where I can get up on a stool. And I'm being lazy.
But the jasmine is mingling with the wisteria (which is still too young to bloom) and coming outside, especially in the evening, the smell is so lovely.
Things are looking good in the garden and I find my energy level is so much higher than it was this time last year. Today will be a break from gardening and going to an ink swatching meet-up...you have to love fountain pens to love this. But it will give me some motivation to do all the other things which I need to do.
More about how the garden is doing shortly!
